As you can imagine there are a lot of Jay-Z portraits floating around, but we thought this one was notable enough to pass-along. The photo illustration blend is not only fresh, but to us it epitomizes what Jay is about. It is by Alberto ‘Sting’ Russo who is a illustrator and founder at Areadesign.

Hideout back from Winter Break

We're back from our winter break with a few announcements.

First is that we're officially launched the Hideout Gallery Facebook Fan Page (so spread the word)!

And even more exciting we have a pop-up show planned with the folks from Bodega at their Fourth Wall Project gallery space March 06, 2010 - April 5th 2010. The show is tentatively titled Cult of Personality showcasing a wide array of photographic portraits of individuals who have made significant contributions to contemporary culture over the past 15 years. The official announcement planned for next week.

J. D. Salinger x Robert Vickrey

In remembrance of the author J. D. Salinger above is a 1961 portrait by Robert Vickrey. Currently on view on the first floor of the National Portrait Gallery where they display portraits of recently deceased individuals of note.

Keinyo White's Portraits!

When we stumbled upon Keinyo White's watercolor portraits it was love at first site. Portraits of his friends and acquaintances are more compelling than most celebrity or historical figure work come across. We identify as he seems to capture the contemporary essence and persona of folks we interact with on the streets on a daily basis. Hideout Gallery hopes to bring Keinyo White's portraits to collectors sometime in 2010 so stay tuned!

This "Cat's Cradle" portrait Muhammad Ali by Henry Casselli is our favorite of this world champion. The ghostly elegance, layered symbolism and conceptual aspects makes it a compelling contemporary portrait painting. The painting hangs in the National Portrait Gallery and their facetoface blog has a reviews it here.

Robert Voltaire nude photograph purchased at auction for $22,000.00 via ArtDaily. Interestingly enough it was an outtake from a fashion shoot. Setting aside the beauty of it, we believe the image transcends due to its angelic and mermaid qualities. What we certainly agree with is Voltaire statement that "Ultimately a photograph can never capture a person's true beauty its up to the viewer to interpret it."

Alex Katz's Portraits

One wonderful thing about being a collector and appreciator is that is that there are endless discoveries. Once such example is learning about Alex Katz's portraits. He is 82 and was, from my understanding, creating contemporary portraiture such as these prior even prior to pop art movement which is fascinating. He currently has a show planned Timothy Taylor Gallery in the UK.

Michael Jackson - King of Pop Portraits

The Michael Jackson estate has organized an exhibit of "extraordinary person belongings to celebrate his life" in the UK on October 28th at The 02 Bubble. From the description it appears they have lots photography pieces, but this portrait painting of MJ as a king by Norman Oak is certainly worth the price of admission!

Beatles to Bowie - National Portrait Museum (UK) Show

For those Hideout readers in the UK this is a must see exhibit (I might event make a special trip). The National Portrait Gallery curated a show consisting of +150 images illustrating how photography influenced 1960s pop music culture.

Photographs from David Bailey, Gered Mankowitz and Robert Whitaker are part of the Beatles to Bowie exhibit. Hope to see you there!

Bobby Grossman - Still Up

One good thing about the recession is that art shows tend to linger. A good example of this is Bobby Grossman's photos at MINA Gallery in NYC (which was suppose to end in June). He has a bunch of 80's picture portraits that blew me away such as this one that has Debbie Harry, Fab 5 Freddie and Lee Quinones chillin in front of a one of his long gone graffiti murals. Kinda wish it was in color to highlight the freshness of the backdrop but as I learned long ago you can't have everything.

John Varvatos - One Step Further

When I walk into John Varvatos shops it is less for the clothes and more for the music photography and books that adorns their spaces. Jazz Photography Show - Herman Leonard

If you're in Los Angeles I encourage y'all to check this Jazz portrait photography show at Reserve (420 North Fairfax) featuring the work of Herman Leonard. Aside from the amazing Miles Davis photo that is the centerpiece they also got some noteworthy photographs of other legends such as Chet Baker, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. Small store with about a dozen pieces on display, but certainly worthwhile if your in LA.
